The Auvergne: a region full of charm and character

Lakes and mountains make the Auvergne a place of breathtaking beauty, especially in the National Park of the volcanos. Harmony between culture and nature gives this region its authentic character.

The dynamic Patrick Gauyacq, originally from Bearn, has been running the INTER-HOTEL des Puys and the INTER-HOTEL VolcanHôtel in Clermont-Ferrand for 6 years. "I was conquered from day I arrived. Let me convince you that the Auvergne is one of the most beautiful regions of France. When I need space, I visit the Chambon lake. Be it summer or winter, the scenery is always magnificent. I watch the reflections of the volcanos in the lake".

Culture and nature in the Auvergne

Every "land" in the Auvergne has a particular charm. Cantal, with the beautiful town of Aurillac, where the International Festival of Street Theatre is held every August, as well as the Art museum and the Volcano museum. Still in Cantal, "le Pays de Salers", known for its cows whose milk is used to make the famous cheese, and finally Saint-Flour, "the capital of Haute Auvergne", with its Art and History museums.

Auvergne is also Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire, departure point of «La Via Podiensis» (Route du Puy), one of the pilgrimage roads to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The town is also known for its lace. The label «Dentelle du Puy» guarantees the authenticity of this hand made lace.

Returning in the direction of Issoire, you can discover the charming small town of Lempdes-sur-Allagnon with its suprising architecture of the 'Halle' built under Louis-Philippe, and the roman church of St Géraud.

Continuing north, you arrive in the land of the volcans, particularly at Clermont-Ferrrand, with its roman basilica Notre-Dame-du-Port (Unesco World Heritage site) and the gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in pumice stone from Volvic, which will impress fans of handsome buildings. And of course, near Clermont-Ferrand, the theme and leisure park of Vulcania where you can discover all the secrets of the volcanos while having fun. For children and adults alike!

A little farther, a few kilometers away, stop in Vichy to see the varied architecture of the town. Vichy is focused on well-being, and is ideal place to recharge your batteries, thanks to the effects of the thermal spa waters. Finally, further east, you can wander through Montluçon, in the cobbled streets of the  medieval city, and view the château of the Ducs de Bourbon.

Visiting Auvergne is like a breath of fresh air. Enjoy regional specialities like 'truffade' (potatoes and fresh cheese from Cantal) the famous aligot, one of the five AOC cheeses ( Saint-Nectaire, Cantal, Salers, Fourme d'Ambert and Bleu d'Auvergne), the regional ham, the sausages and salamis, the lentils 'Vertes du Puy' (A.O.C) and the Verveine du Velay.…and as Patrick Gauyacq says  : « L'Auvergne is above all a welcome by kind, warm-hearted people who will always know where to guide you'.
