The Loire Valley region, in the footsteps of Georges Sand on the banks of the Loire

The banks of the Loire river, recognised as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, will be the departure point for visits to this region full of history.

When Pierre-Marie Audebert says he was born into the hotel business, you have to take him seriously. It was in a room of the family hotel where he first saw daylight : the INTER-HOTEL du Lion d’Argent et des Tanneries in La Châtre, a village  20 minutes from Châteauroux. «In 1977, I took back this hotel with my wife».

«In La Châtre, in the south of the Loire Valley region, our clients come mainly for three reasons: hiking between the cereal plains and the foothills of the Massif Central, car racing thanks to the circuit at La Châtre which has been in existence for more than 95 years, and finally the rich heritage left by George Sand».

More generally, the Loire Valley region is known for the Val de Loire, which is the biggest site ever designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in France. Imagine 280 km between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire, ideally adapted for great hiking on foot or bicycle. The  «Loire by bike» is a vast  programme which has already set up 800 km of marked and secure itineraires, which will delight nature lovers holidaying in the region.

"There are magnificent towns in our region. Orleans, which was liberated by Joan of Arc, opens the door to the Val de Loire. The festivals of the Loire, including the jazz festival, are not to be missed... Chartres and its splendid cathedral«the Acropolis of France», as the sculptor Auguste Rodin liked to call it. There's also Bourgesthe capital of Berry, which has beautiful mansion houses and well stocked museums. Finally Tours, with its medieval, teminates this incredible historical voyage".

«Chinon is, with Sancerre, the most popular wine district of the region».

Coming back to George Sand, a notable personality of the region. She was the first woman to match here male contempories in terms of success and fame. It is, in fact, one of the reasons the author decided to change her name from Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin and adopt a masculine pseudonym: she did not want to be judged as a woman, but for her qualities as a writer. A creed which became a lifesyle for this woman who liked cigars and men's suits, and who managed to enter places previously reserved for men only. "It's incontestably a woman who perfectly incarnes the strong character of our region", concludes Pierre-Marie Audebert
