Brittany, something for everyone

From the north to the south of Brittany, you can appreciate a wide variety of landscapes. Inland, discover legends and traditions; on the Channel or Atlantic coasts, magnificent panoramas from the edge of the cliffs will leave you breathless. From the Emerald coast and the rose granite coast in the gulf of Morbihan, there's something for everyone in the Brittany region.

Originally from Paimpol, Yann Michard has been managing the INTER-HOTEL Park Hotel Bellevue of Trégastel for 6 years. This charming hotel, surrounded by landscaped gardens, has conserved an atmosphere of the 1930's, when it was built. When Yann talks about his region, it's to highlight the beauty of the landscapes. : "The Granite Rose coast is a site of remarkable beauty, among the most prestigious in France. I particularly like the spectacular forms of the rocks, which have been eroded over centuries".

A cultural stay in town

Let's start our visit by Rennes, university town with a rich heritage: the Palais Saint Georges, the Opera, the Parliament and the Palais du Commerce are a few of the many monuments of the town. Wandering through the pedestrian area you'll discover the wooden houses which give added charm to the cobbled streets. Don't miss the Thabor gardens, in the east of town, considered among the finest in France. During your stay, don't forget to visit the pretty town of Chartres de Bretagne, located south of Rennes. You'll appreciate the quality of life there, the Normandière park, and the old industrial site of the «Fours à chaux», which were the origin of the economic success of the region in the 19th century. North east of Rennes, take the direction of Fougères to visit the medieval castle and the museum of watchmaking, which, through its collection of more than 200 pieces, retraces the evolution of the measurement of time.

A romantic break in Brittany

Approaching the Emerald coast, don't miss a stopover in Dinan, a medieval town with over 70 historical monuments. The narrow cobbled streets will take you to the port of Dinan where you can take a romantic boat trip on the river Rance.

Not far from there, discover Saint-Malo, «the sailors town», a major town of northern Brittany known for its ramparts, its two famous sailors, Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin, and also for being one of the most visited places in all of Brittany. Your tour will take you to Lamballe for a visit to the Museum of Arts and Traditions Populaires which traces the evolution of local craftsmanship in the region. At Guingamp, with its 5 different architectural styles, don't miss the castle with its ramparts overlooking the valley of Trieux, the basilica and the central square with its timber-framed houses with granite facades.

On the coast, your stay becomes more romantic. The biggest natural reserve in Brittany, the bay of Saint-Brieuc has beautiful panoramas, alternating valleys, cliffs, creeks, and wild beaches. The centre of town has a rich cultural and architectural heritage, including the cathedral Saint Etienne, «which looks like a fortress» and reminding us of the strong presence of religious art in Brittany.

Don't miss the bay of Plérin, near Saint-Brieuc, popular for watersports and sailing. A visit to the Museum of the Sea in Paimpol, on the site of a sail making factory is essential. You'll leave as experts on the fishing history of Paimpol. Not far from there, in the pretty seaside town of Trégastel you can see the rose granite coast and admire the breathtaking views. The perfect place for a romantic stay on the Brittany coast.

A well-being break in Brittany

If you go along the coast to Roscoff, you'll discover a pretty town with a seafaring heritage: a number of the residences in the centre of town were built by rich merchants, arms dealers and pirates from the 16th and 17th centuries. But Roscoff is also the town where the first thalassotherapy centre in France was established in the 19th century. Thanks to its geographic location, "the mild climate, and the quality of the air and sea", Brittany is a first choice for sea water treatments and fitness being breaks. Benodet, Dinard, Saint-Malo or Quiberon are all dedicated to well being, with thalassotherapy centres to welcome you for relaxing stays.

Continuing to Finistère, you'll find Brest, a town with a rich religious, civil and military heritage. Don't miss the numerous opportunies for a boat trip, to discover the islands of Ouessant or Molène, surrounded by reefs and currents. Nature here is rough and wild... If you suffer from seasickness, you can visit Océanopolis, a giant theme park (with an aquarium) dedicated to the worlds oceans.

In Pont l'Abbé, the word "tradition" shows its full meaning. In Quimperlé, stop at the "Maison des Archers" and the "Halle à la Décoration". Don't miss Lorient, famous for its celtic festival, and numerous tourist sites including the Tour Davis, the underwater museum, or "La Thalassa", an old scientific sailing ship which is used today to study the oceans. Next to Ploëmel, near Carnac where the stone circles are known around the world. Finish the tour of Brittany with Vannes, in the golf of Morbihan, where you can discover a number of monuments on a walk around the ramparts.

In Brittany, the attractions and opportunities for discovery reflect the diversity of the region. As for the climate, it's variable, with fine weather following quickly after rain.
