Cécile & Franco Fancello, INTER-HOTEL de l'Ange in Guebwiller
Cécile & Franco Fancello

The Alsace region, at the crossroads of Europe

Timber-framed houses covered with geraniums, and Christmas markets perfumed with spices are just two of the images of this region, where old traditions mix happily with the dynamism of today.

Cécile Fancello has been living in Alsace for 14 years, where she met her husband Franco. Together they manage the INTER-HOTEL de l'Ange in Guebwiller, near Colmar. "And in fact, I'm from the south, but I don't want to go back. The severe winters of the region are in contrast to the micro climate that a large part of the Haut Rhin enjoys.  Colmar, where the INTER-HOTELs Le Colbert and L'Arbre Vert are situated, is the town which has the highest number of sunny days in France!".

"The people from Alsace eat according to what's in season: asparagus in spring, different types of strawberries in summer (which is also the season for game), and the famous sauerkraut to warm the cold, dry winters." The region is known for its Christmas markets and decorations (the INTER-HOTEL Hostellerie Belle-Vue in Saverne is the perfect place to stay to enjoy the festivities). The locals enjoy traditions; at Easter, it's not unusual to find easter trees in the windows of the houses. At the end of August, the whole town of Selestat (INTER-HOTEL Le Verger des Chateaux) is inundated with Dahlias during the 'Corso Fleuri.

"The proximity of Germany and Switzerland makes the region culturally rich. The Automobile museum in Mulhouse has the biggest collection of cars in the world, and Basle in Switzerland has a number of world renowned works of art in its museums." The INTER-HOTELs Salvator and Captain are the ideal base from which to discover this corner of the region.

A region at the crossroads of Europe

European Parliament in Strasbourg
European Parliament in Strasbourg

In the Bas-Rhin, the European parliament in Strasbourg is an essential visit, in an ever- growing Europe. The INTER-HOTELs d'Alsace and Le Forum will be able to advise you on your visit to this institution, as well as other parts of the town (the cathedral, 'Little France', etc.).

"I could carry on about the wine routes, to taste our Reisling and Gewurztraminer, or the beauty of the Vosges, says Cecile Fancello, but I would like to highlight the kindness and warmth of the local people, who have made me, even if it's an old cliché, an adopted alsacienne".
